UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta Lecturer Earns Doctoral Degree from Universitas Gadjah Mada

Hikmatul Akbar, a lecturer in the International Relations Program at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta, has officially earned his Doctorate in Inter-Religious Studies from the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada. His dissertation, titled “Islamic Narratives as Framing: A Study on Islamic Radical Movements in Indonesia 2012–2021,” explores how religious narratives are used as framing devices within Islamic radical movements in Indonesia over nearly a decade. This research offers a significant contribution to the understanding of the intersection between religion, public discourse, and the evolving dynamics of radicalism in Indonesia. It also provides valuable insights for the development of strategic studies in international relations and security studies.

Throughout his doctoral journey, Hikmatul Akbar was supervised by leading scholars in the field: Prof. Noorhaidi Hasan, M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D., and Dicky Sofjan, M.P.P., M.A., Ph.D. His graduation was formally confirmed through a letter issued by the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Collaboration of the UGM Graduate School, Prof. Dr. Ir. Widyanto Dwi Nugroho, S.Hut., M.Agr.

Hikmatul Akbar’s achievement marks an important milestone not only for himself but also for FISIP UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta. Given the relevance of his expertise to global dynamics, security issues, and interreligious relations, his presence as a newly minted doctor is expected to further strengthen academic quality, research capacity, and scholarly development within the International Relations Program.
